On 6th of July 1988 the Piper Alpha oil production platform run by   Occidental Petroleum (Caledonia) Limited exploded resulting in a series of gas and oil fires destroying the platform.

  • 167 people died
  • only 61 survived
  • 30 bodies were never recovered

It remains the world’s worst offshore oil disaster in lives lost.

  1. “Like” is really the wrong term but I think it is a terrible moment in history that deserves to be commemorated so thanks for drawing it to my attention
