Weather Forecast: A colder, windy period of weather with frequent wintry showers.

Today 3rd January:

A return to cold wintry conditions. A bright start with just a few snow showers but by late morning showers will become more frequent in the strengthening northwesterly winds. Showers will be a mix of sleet, snow and hail. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Tonight:

Northwesterly severe gales and frequent wintry showers affecting the islands. Orkney seeing the strongest winds in the early hours of Tuesday. Minimum temperature 1 °C.

Tuesday 4th January:

A bitterly cold day with severe gales at times throughout the day, accompanied by some heavy showers which will be a mix of sleet and hail, perhaps grouping at times. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Further wintry showers on Wednesday but less showers by afternoon and lighter winds with some brightness too. Turning wet and windy Thursday, then further blustery showers later Thursday and Friday.
