   We need to get a grip……..

   A Lancet study has revealed Britain’s Covid death rate is much better than previous statistics have suggested. A new analysis of global excess deaths – a measure the Office for Statistics Regulation told MPs last week is a more accurate count than total deaths – finds the UK is actually a middle-ranking country with an excess death rate of 126.8 per 100,000, almost identical to France’s 124.4 and just ahead of Germany’s 120.5. Anti-lockdown Sweden? 91.2…

   The news is set to deal a crushing blow to political point-scoring lovers on social media who enjoy claiming the UK had a particularly awful pandemic compared to similar western countries.

   The global average excess death rate from the pandemic has now been calculated at 120 per 100,000, putting Britain only slightly ahead and roughly in the middle of the 191 countries included in the study, placing 102nd. This is much more positive than if measured by total deaths, which suggests Britain had the 24th worst pandemic of any country. The Lancet also finds that many countries have been under-reporting deaths to a mass extent, meaning the global death toll may be three times higher than the official figure…

      ‘Nice’ to see your amateurish attempt to interpret the findings of a study. The conclusions you draw are apparently driven by the personal urge to somehow justify the pandemic handling by the UK and categorise failures as success. In the absence of a capability on your side to evaluate findings of academic research correctly and put those findings into perspective, I have to point out that modelling studies are not suitable to be interpreted by laymen like yourself in such a simplified form. Perhaps you have a look at the limitations of the study. Furthermore, it contains one specific approach to calculate excess mortalities, but there are other approaches too. The overall emerging picture appears plausible, however, there cannot be any granular detail for obvious reasons and the authors have pointed that out.

      The ‘crushing blow’ I can only see in the context of your comment above and it has been dealt to you. The pandemic was and is no competition between countries who fares best and who fares worst, and it was not the study’s purpose to find this out. Otherwise they would have had to analyse a range of other factors additionally such as restrictions, duration of those, compliance, availability and timing of vaccinations, spatial variant dynamics and many others much more and/or in detail, and again they point out the scarcity of available data.

         Bravo Mr. Davidson! But it’s worth bearing in mind that this is the person who quoted Ronald Reagan as a fount of wisdom……

         He really is on another planet. I could see the point in that if it was a more pleasant place to be. But it isn’t – it’s a confused, cold, bitter, chaotic place.

         My advice is – wish him well and leave him to it.

         Though – he presented you with the opportunity of giving a reference to the Lancet article, which is a good thing for folk to see.

   Not every nonsense is freedom of expression. Trying to manipulate public opinion by deliberate and agenda-driven misinterpretation of scientific studies certainly is not.
