Home Education: Consultation

It is not known how many children in Scotland receive Home Education. Estimates vary from 5,000 to 6,000 but it could be many more. There is no register of children who are educated at home. Parents have to ask permission of local authorities if their child started their schooling in a local authority school and are then withdrawn . But for many parents, Home Education was the preferred choice from the very start and for them there was no requirement to inform the local authority.

The Scottish Government is updating guidance on Home Education for those parents/carers who choose that option for their kids. You can access the consultation by clicking on this link: Home education guidance: consultation

The consultation closes on 13th of July 2022.

Children who are educated at home do not require to follow the Curriculum for Excellence. The parent/carer is now the main ‘teacher’ and it is their responsibility to provide the child with learning experiences and materials. There is no financial support for this.
