Friends of Sanday Kirk Delighted with Funding Award

On Tuesday we published the exciting news that both Sanday and Hoy communities had been successful in applying for funding from the Scottish Land Fund.

The Friends of Sanday Kirk community group have expressed their delight in the funding to acquire the historic Cross Kirk church on Sanday through the Scottish Land Fund.

They said:

“This achievement marks a significant milestone in the community’s efforts to preserve part of the island’s heritage and expand the range and choice of community space on the island. We envisage a vibrant future use of the building including a communal meeting place, an exhibition space, a performance venue, as well as ensuring the retention of a place of worship for island churchgoers.

“This acquisition would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Sanday community and the determination of FoSK members. We extend our sincere gratitude to all involved and to the Scottish Land Fund for recognising the importance of empowering islanders to take ownership of the last significant building of its kind on Sanday.

“We are also grateful for the advice and assistance from our wider support network who shared our vision and helped drive our project forward.

“We will now progress our negotiations with the Church of Scotland, appoint a Project Officer and embark upon initial refurbishment works.”
