The Strawplaiters of Orkney at The Northlight Gallery

Explore the history of working women and girls at the next exhibition at The Northlight Gallery, Stromness.

The exhibition is open from 11am to 4pm daily from Monday 13th to Saturday 25th of November.

On Tuesday, 14th, at 7pm Fiona Grahame will be speaking about her book ‘The Strawplaiters of Orkney’, a fascinating insight into this period in the early 19th century of Orkney.

On Wednesday, 15th, from 11am to 4pm, Sue Knowles will be demonstrating the skill of strawplaiting.

And on Saturday 25th November the exhibition is taking part in the international festival of Fair Saturday highlighting the work of Orkney Rape and Sexual Assault Service (ORSAS). Fair Saturday is a global cultural response to the consumerism of Black Friday.

The exhibition and activities are part of Book Week Scotland. All are free and open to the public.
