Luckily, last week’s storms abated on Saturday, giving just enough to get the tree up in time for the Deerness Community tree lighting that evening as you can see in this video of the event.  

Shannon Foubister organised the whole event with a tree donated by Thelma Bruce.   The Stromness Pipe Band started things off with a few tunes after which Catriona Robertson said a few words and thanked all those involved.  Thelma did the honours and turned on the lights to a rousing cheer and a round of applause.

We then moved into the hall where Brough Bakes supplied refreshments of sandwiches cakes and mulled wine while the Orkney Traditional Music Project entertained us with a few festive tunes.

This has become an annual event in the Deerness calendar and is getting better each year. Make sure you don’t miss it next year!
