Who would have thought a band with a member still in primary school could be so good?  This was the case at the Over 60’s Christmas Lunch in Deerness on Saturday when we were entertained by Auskerry, a five-piece band of School pupils.  Three of these were children of Douglas Montgomery who joined the band for most of their tunes.

We enjoyed a wonderful meal, starting with soup followed by turkey, neeps, and tatties and finished with trifle, all expertly prepared by the hall committee. The Christmas decorations added a festive touch to the cheerful atmosphere.

Of course, there was the obligatory raffle where your truly managed to win back the bottle of wine we’d provided in the first place!

Then it was time for Auskerry.  The moment they started playing we could tell we were in for a treat.

These are a very talented bunch of people who held us transfixed while they played a selection of Scottish and festive tunes.  It wasn’t just the playing, Lily Montgomery who introduced each set of tunes spoke with an easy confidence that belies her youth.  I think we’re going to hear a lot more of this band.
