A film about the extraordinary life and career of James Ramsay MacDonald is showing at the Cromarty Hall, St Margaret’s Hope, on Wednesday 22nd May at 7pm.

The film is based on the discovery of a box of cine films in 2016 under the stairs of The Hillocks, Ramsay MacDonald’s Lossiemouth home. The cine reels had been filmed by Ramsay’s daughter Ishbel and the cine footage, combined with exclusive family photographs, provide fascinating insights into his remarkable life and times. Growing up in Lossiemouth Ramsay received an excellent Scottish education and the fishing community provided an enduring moral compass for his controversial life in politics.
His compelling story is related by two of his grand-daughters and people of Moray. The documentary therefore aims to provide a more complete and balanced view of his life and legacy.
It has been touring throughout the UK to commemorate the centennial of his election in 2024 as the first Labour Prime Minister of Great Britain and received great interest among political historians when screened in Cambridge.
The film was directed and produced in Moray by Yvonne M Findlay in collaboration with the MacDonald family.
The music is by Ivan Drever and Sonia Allori.
