Burwick postmistress Yvonne Nicholson has retired after 47 years running the rural Post Office from the family’s Orkney farm.

Yvonne’s husband’s grandparents David and Mary Ellen previously ran the Post Office from this location for 41 years. Yvonne took over in March 1977 when Mary Ellen passed away.

Now at the age of 72, Yvonne, who was born and raised in Kirkwall, has served her last Burwick Post Office customer.

Postmistress Yvonne Nicholson said:

“I have loved serving this community and getting to know people well. Lots of people have been popping in to wish me well with my retirement.

“I managed to keep Burwick Post Office open during the pandemic and I was a lot busier than normal as people wanted to send letters and parcels to people that they could not see, do home shopping returns and people were having a clear out and selling things on eBay. People were working from home and they were happy to visit my small Post Office.”

Yvonne’s sons still continue to run the beef farm and Yvonne will continue to do the admin for the farm. She will also continue as treasurer for the church, which she has done for the past 31 years.

The nearest Post Office is St Margarets Hope where the Burwick community would already go to visit other shops.

Post Office Area Manager, Louise Duff, said:

“I want to sincerely thank the Nicholson family for running Burwick Post Office for the past 88 years. Yvonne has loyally served this rural community since 1977 and I wish her a well-earned retirement.”
