Dr Alex Armitage, Scottish Greens candidate in the forthcoming General Election, was in good form and enjoyed by audience members at the Radio Orkney hustings in Kirkwall on Friday 7 June. Prior to the hustings he spent time in St. Margaret’s Hope, campaigning with Scottish Green colleagues Steve Sankey and Cllr John Ross Scott.

Alex said:

“It was exciting to take part in the hustings, with an array of questions to answer both from the audience and Rob Flett, The Radio Orkney Chairman for the event.

“In Orkney, we are fortunate because we’re so well-placed to benefit from opportunities provided by future jobs in the Green industrial revolution.”

Alex drew much applause from the audience with his call for a ceasefire in Gaza. He appealed to the UK Government to recognise the state of Palestine and withhold the provision of arms and military support to the Israeli government. Alex spoke of how he had used his voice as a consultant paediatrician to highlight the thousands of children killed by the Israeli government in a letter to the Times, co-signed by dozens of UK paediatric colleagues. Alex has also used his position as a Councillor in Shetland Council to successfully pass a motion calling for a ceasefire, return of hostages and provision of humanitarian aid.

Steve Sankey, Orkney Greens Co-Convenor, and a resident of South Ronaldsay said:

“It was great to have Alex visit the ‘Hope and listen to local concerns. His approach to the hustings was refreshing and enthusiastic, and I’m sure that his views on the changes required in our society underpinned by a Green approach will be appreciated by Radio Orkney listeners later this week. I’d be delighted if locals would Vote Green in the election on 4 July.”
