On 7th July 1814 the novel Waverley by Sir Walter Scott was published in Edinburgh by by Archibald Constable and Co.

The novel, one of the first historical novels written, is set during the years 1745 – 46, the Jacobite campaign. Scott was famous as a poet and published his novel anonymously. It was priced at 1 guinea.

It was a massive success.
