The extraordinary excavations at the Ness of Brodgar within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Heart of Neolithic Orkney, will come to an end this summer.

Layers of walls as archaeologists work to uncover the floors and walls of buildings

The site was discovered in 2003 and year after year has never ceased to amaze and change our way of thinking about those first farmers in Orkney with a complex society and skills in construction which leave us in awe of them.

The site is open to the public during the week and there is a special Open Day on Sunday 4th August 11am to 4pm where there are lots of extra activities for all the family. There is parking at the site. If you wish to use public transport the X1 via Skara Brae/Brodgar and the 8S can take you there.

If you can get to it this year prepare to be amazed. If you cannot, we have a short film of the excavation.

And to keep up to date with what is happening there is an excellent website : The Ness of Brodgar

I am hoping we shall get an very informative response regards the ‘permanent’
closure and sealing of this iconic excavation.
It would be good to know the answers to:
    1. Has it been concluded that no further important discoveries will be made?
    2. How much has the challenge of funding on-site ‘workers’ played a part in the decision?
    3. Have wider underground studies revealed there are no more areas of interest?
    4. In what state will the site be left?
    5. Where will the major findings (artifacts and interpretations) be located?
