Swandro is an incredible archaeological site in Rousay, Orkney, at threat from coastal erosion. The excavation has been covered in The Orkney News in several articles.
There is an excellent website run by Swandro-Orkney Coastal Archaeology Trust which explains all there has been discovered so far about the site, the artefacts that have been found, the threat of coastal erosion, and how you can help fund the ongoing work.
Recently Time Team filmed the excavation with the viewer being led round the site by John Gater, frequent visitor to Orkney and well known Time Team member. The film is excellent for anyone – whether you have visited Swandro or if it is not possible for you to get there.
The film is free to view on the Time Team YouTube channel.
The film reveals the discoveries emerging from the excavations and what might be – not a broch – but a wheelhouse. There is more because lying beneath the buildings is some other construction and more of that will be excavated in 2025.
Here is a montage of some of the incredible images from Swandro with thanks to Swandro-Orkney Coastal Archaeology Trust
