poster for the Newark project

Throughout July and August on Sundays and Wednesdays an exhibition at St Ninian’s Kirk, Deerness, explores the findings of The Newark Project.

The Newark Project ran from 2019 – 2022 and was a three-year archaeological, historical and social history project.

” The name ‘Newark’ (New Work) comes from the 16th century manor house which once stood on this site.” Orkney Museums.

There is also a Facebook Page for all the events taking place in Deerness.

A few years ago, when the archaeologists were working intensively at the far end of Newark Bay, Mike and I were walking on the sand, where I picked up a plastic baby doll’s arm from the tide-line, and put it in my pocket.

After we’d been to see the work in progress, we met a couple of young archaeologists in the car park. I said to the lass – “We found a baby’s arm on the beach” and reached into my pocket. Her face!
I then got out the plastic baby’s arm.

Thing is….St. Ninian’s is in something of a precarious position itself…… https://theorkneynews.scot/2021/04/07/a-different-approach-to-sandside-bay/ I’ll stop now!
