By Bernie Bell.

Readers of The Orkney News might remember this

A replica skull and images of the reconstructed  heads are now in St. Ninian’s, Wednesday and Sunday, until the end of August, so we thought we’d follow the Ancestors by going for a walk at Newark Bay, where we visited the site, but only looking at it from below

as the public are advised not to go onto the archaeology, which is very vulnerable and unstable http://www.spanglefish.com/berniesblog/blog.asp?blogid=17038

Then back along the beach, into the car, and on to St. Ninian’s, where we encountered replicas of how the skull of one of the individuals was re-constructed

Note the distortion in stage two – this will have come about whilst the skull was lying in its grave over the centuries.  This shows the same individual when the reproduction head was completed

And, with added facial hair

We  moved on to the Newark Heads displayed on-screen.  Firstly, the Scandinavian man

And became complete.

Then the Pictish woman

Transitioning

These models were part of Stephen Johnsons Degree show,  MSc Forensic Art & Facial Imagery, University of Dundee 2023.

And finally, a note of thanks and appreciation

  1. Thank you! This kind of reconstruction is so amazing.

  2. Isn’t it just! And….you’re very welcome!

  3. Went on Sunday it was an amazing and informative display. Of people and times gone by which had been forgotten.
I wonder in years to come if DNA will show any links to existing residents.
