Peace campaigners in Orkney will meet on the Kirk Green on Saturday 30 August between 1 and 2pm. The Vigils for Gaza have been taking place since the end of October 2023 with those attending calling for an immediate ceasefire, the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, and the release of all Hostages. All are welcome to join with them in their hopes for a lasting peace and an end to the Gaza Genocide.

Across the world an increasing number of demonstrations have been taking place condemning the continuing bombardment by Israel and the use of starvation by blockading aid from getting in, and the complete destruction of Gaza’s agriculture.

Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN aid coordination office, OCHA said that the situation in Gaza “was on a descent into a massive famine”.

People who go out in search of food and water for their starving families are being targeted and killed. Over 2,000 people seeking aid have been killed in three months, according to records from the UN Human Rights Office.

Among the fatalities were one female photojournalist, four male journalists, a Palestinian Civil Defence (PCD) driver, a doctor and three other medical staff.

Over 30 people were injured, including one doctor and one nurse, critically ill patients who were receiving care at the complex,  two journalists, one Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) paramedic, and seven PCD officers who got injured live on the news while attempting to rescue the injured and retrieve the fatalities from the first strike.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that the strikes hit the hospital’s main building, which houses the emergency department, inpatient ward and surgical unit, and damaged the emergency staircase.

On the same day, at about 16:45, two Palestinians, including a journalist, were killed and several others injured when tents sheltering internally displaced people (IDPs) were hit, northwest of Khan Younis. Earlier on 23 August, at about 18:00, a Palestinian journalist was shot and killed while he was covering events near Zikim crossing, in North Gaza.

At a protest organised by the NUJ (National Union of Journalists) on 12 August, Hilary Horrocks, of the Edinburgh & District branch, called for continued demonstrations as well as donations to the IFJ Safety Fund, saying:

“These last remaining journalists have been murdered to stop them bearing witness as Netanyahu prepares his deadliest yet attack on Gaza City.”

The Glasgow branch held a solidarity vigil to honour journalists and media colleagues killed in Gaza on Friday, 22 August at Buchanan Street Steps.

Over 219 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed over the last 22 months, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
