Billy’s Night Oot is on at the Phoenix, Picky Centre, Kirkwall -10 October and the Cromarty Hall, St Margaret’s Hope, 11 October.

Amongst films being shown is  the 25th anniversary of the Riding of the Marches (2011). The film was made by Claire Worrall who used to be one of the projectionists at Picky. An appropriate time to show it ahead of next year’s 40th anniversary of the re-introduction of the event. Captain Bill Spence who was one of those behind bringing the event back will be attending on the night.

Other events include a bull sale from 1958, a mannequin parade from 1957, and  various aspects of Orkney weather over the years including the 1953 gale.

The unveiling by  Mrs Annie Tait, St Olaf’s Wynd of the addition to Kirkwall War memorial commemorating those who died in WW2, on 6 June 1953.

Kirkwall War Memorial was first unveiled on 17 October 1923 by General Lord Horne. The Orkney Herald produced a special supplement to their regular weekly publication.
