By Bernie Bell.

On Friday morning, the people of Venezuela were living their lives, being Venezuelan.  By Saturday evening, Trump had bombed bits of Venezuela, kidnapped the elected President and his wife, and claims to be in charge of Venezuela now.  And he’s getting away with-it!

When I initially saw this piece of news I thought….Why?  Why Venezuela? What has Venezuela been doing? The answer, as usual these days is…nothing much, just…being Venezuela.  Meanwhile……America is  just doing what it does…being an aggressor.

The Trump claimed that those fishing boats were loaded with drugs for America – turned out they were most likely….fishing boats.  And even if they were loaded with drugs for America, it’s up to America to tighten their Customes Control.

Then I read up on the attack on Venezuela.  One word leapt out at me……Oil.

This sets a precedent.  Who’s next?

He’s had his eye on Greenland.  Here goes….Trump is a Climate Change denier, while America is one of the major contributors to producing Climate Change. The ice is melting, sea-ways are opening up – Greenland becomes strategically useful, while also  having desirable mineral deposits.

Apparently he has his greedy little eye on Cuba. Cuba has long been a thorn in the side of America, for being reasonably successfully Communist and, as such, being a bit too ‘close to home’.

I have visions of Britain coming under American rule – role reversal on a  grand scale – but America has been taking over Britain for decades, culturally and politically,  without a blow being struck.

As chance would have it, yesterday evening we watched  ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’.   In the 20 years since the alien invasion, the peoples of the Earth have become united.  They’re aware that the aliens could return and that their best policy is to be unified.  Is that what it would take to make us see sense – a very powerful threat from outside?

And….another factor…more refugees…..from Venezuela – who presumably won’t be allowed into America.

I realize that there’s very little point in my going off on one about it – what can I do?  Raise awareness maybe – tho’  I’d hope that folk reading this….are aware.

I’m glad that I’m old and that I don’t have children who would grow up in what our world is becoming.  I mean it.

I wrote this a few years ago…..

  1. I completely agree. Venezuela and its people should be allowed to determine their own fate no matter the economic or social conditions within the country.
Venezuela is, according to Opec, the only country in the world with larger oil reserves than Saudi Arabia. Yet under Mr Maduro, the economy fell off a cliff, amid a blizzard of nationalisations, runaway corruption and gross mismanagement.

Chavista loyalists with no relevant qualifications were installed at PDVSA, the state-owned oil company that was the national cash cow, accounting for more than 90 per cent of exports. Predictably, its output nosedived.

Meanwhile, agricultural production plummeted as the regime supplied food free or at heavily subsidised prices to regime-supporting neighbourhoods, often in urban slums, while leaving the rest of the country to starve.

And medicines needed for cancer and a host of other life-threatening but treatable diseases vanished from the shop shelves. Many Venezuelans were forced into desperate strategies, including rummaging through rubbish, to survive.

Ultimately, as many as eight million – one quarter of the population – were forced to flee their homeland, in many cases just to be able to feed and clothe their families. It is, statistically, the western hemisphere’s greatest ever refugee crisis.

Anyone who complained, from ordinary citizens to prominent opposition leaders, risked imprisonment and torture at the hands of the thuggish security forces.

In the meantime, the economy shrank by at least 75 per cent under Mr Maduro – the nail in the coffin for a country that the 1970s oil boom had transformed into Latin America’s richest.

What were Maduro’s qualifications to run his country, he was a bus drive rand now he’s now driven Venezuela over the cliff.

    1. Venezuela was SANCTIONED by the US for decades rendering it poverty stricken, unable to trade, uanable to grow food etc…it wasn’t Maduro who ‘pushed the country over the cliff’ at all, the US would have welcomed him with open arms had he done so, because that would have meant a coup and oil booty for the US and their dodgy nasty pals.

      1. In fact Maduro seemed to be a bit of a hippie imo, he talked about peace and love, sharing the planet, living in harmony, peace for all etc. He also offered the US some of Venezuela’s oil a few weeks ago, and, a couple of days ago, wanted to go into talks with the US…to negotiate stuff. So what he was a bus driver, what’s wrong with being a bus driver, they are essential to the functioning of any city and country.

Should he have been a greedy tech billionaire instead? Or educated at Eton as happens in the UKEng parliament when folks are elevated to high office…who know nowt.
Just have to look at who tRump has plonked into high positions in his rogue government, and be very scared indeed, they are his puppets and do as told, not in the least competent, just nasty puppets. Scary.

      2. The Left has never accepted the notion of America as the leader of the free world. Now that Trump seems to be abandoning that idea, the world is likely to become less free, less democratic and more violent. Instead of urging the US to rally the West in defence of embattled democracies such as Ukraine, Israel or Taiwan, the Left continues to regurgitate old anti-American tropes.
Now Europe has to rely on a united front to defend itself, to commit money and make decisive decisions quickly. This as we know is not going to happen.
