Monday morning, two herons flew over our garden – one decided to land and hunt for frogs in the pond.
A very big heron, or a very small broch?

S/he caught his first frog, and marched across to the clearer water to wash it

Minutes later, he caught his second frog, washed it and gumped it down his neck

Next, he caught two frogs together, though one escaped and hopped off back to the pond

We wondered if they were a mating pair, and he picked them up together in his beak, but found it all too much to handle. Anytime soon we’ll find spawn in the pond.
He then caught and ate another one – maybe ‘the one that got away’!
He then stood, stock still, digesting for about fifteen minutes before flying away – well, he had eaten four frogs!

We like to see frogs in the pond – but a heron’s gotta eat!
