A fascinating ongoing local project has been investigating the role and lives of Women Doctors in Orkney.

As March is Women’s History month it is apt that some of those involved in the research are holding an informal open Saturday, in the MacGillivray Room, Orkney Library, Kirkwall. Between 11am and 3pm on 21st March visitors can find out what the research group have discovered and chat to some of those who are taking part.

This will be the last chance to see the group’s findings before they begin work on a book to tell the remarkable lives of these women, a story which seems unique to Orkney.

On the day, the group will be adding to the ‘Doctors Quilt’, which illustrates all the women doctors in Orkney between 1894 and 1948, with the islands where they worked, and other details of their lives. Also on display will be other artefacts and information.

In the Orkney Archive, Kirkwall, there has been a small display of some of the research work leading up to this open day.

The research group held an exhibition last year in The Pier Arts Centre.

Since then, work has continued and so much more has been discovered. This is an event not to be missed.

The project has an informative blog which it is developing as more stories come to light  Orkney Women Doctors Project (1894 to 1948)

And a Facebook page: Orkney Women Doctors (1894 to 1948).
