We haven’t been to Waulkmill for some years.  Last time was on an Autumn day

This time was on a Spring day and as we drove along, the verges were full of daffodils in flower.

We parked in the little space by the road, before you come to the toilet block, and set off down the track to the bay

The track is part of the St. Magnus Way

We turned to look at the channel which carries the outflow of water from Kirbister Loch into the bay

looking down Waulkmill Bay to Scapa Flow

Where the salt-marsh begins, the water in the channel was low enough for Mike to, cautiously, cross to the other bank and back again on a rough causeway of stones

shallow stretch of water

Before wandering through the salt-marsh pools

Walking back along the bay, we sat on some of the bigger stones at the left-hand side to eat our sandwiches and watch the tide go out

the sands appearing at low tide

Then back up the path, looking back at the sandy beach which had been water on our way down

the curve of the bay now all sand at low tide

Another Grand Day Out in Orkney!
