Islands communities are well known for hosting a wealth of creative talent. For some turning that creativity into a successful business is difficult – how to get started.

On Saturday 28 March an exhibition of some of those creative islanders opened in the Pier Art Centre, Stromness, Orkney.

Those featured took part in a course piloted by Robert Gordon University and the Islands Entrepreneurial Network. It’s a project supported by funding from the UK Government and the Scottish Government through the Islands Growth Deal.

What was immediately noticeable at the launch of the showcase event was the variety of people and ideas supported: from clothing and jewellery, to gaming and bread making.

Once people have completed the course what are their next steps? How have the workshops shaped their ambitions ?

Some expressed the desire to now look for their own studio spaces. Others have been encouraged to test out new ideas and how those can be shared. Refining ideas, and producing a recognisable brand, were also future aims for some of the creatives. In all their creative output has been enhanced by participation in the course.

Orkney’s Kirsteen Stewart has been helping to foster and guide the participants in the course.
