“We are incredibly humbled and deeply grateful to be named as finalists for two UK Dance Awards.” – Stephanie J Hellewell Baird.

Move Orkney CIC, based at its community dance hub in Kirkwall, has been named a finalist for two major categories at the inaugural UK Dance Awards.

This national recognition follows the studio’s historic double victory at the One Dance UK Awards, solidifying the island studio’s standing within the British dance sector.

The UK Dance Awards, which celebrate excellence, inclusion, and standard-raising practices across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, have shortlisted Move Orkney for two distinct national accolades. This continuous recognition highlights the profound regional and national impact of the studio’s inclusive approach to movement.

This finalist announcement follows a milestone moment at the One Dance UK Awards ceremony held in Bradford. Out of thousands of nominations across the home nations, Move Orkney was presented with two of the sector’s highest distinctions:

  • The Dance Sector Spotlight Award, presented to Artistic Director Stephanie J Hellewell Baird for outstanding leadership and sector contribution
  • The Green Dance Award, recognising Move Orkney’s creative dedication to environmental sustainability and climate awareness through film and performance.

Looking forward, Move Orkney is expanding its horizons by setting ambitious new goals within the professional dance industry. Through its own dedicated residency offerings, international cross-border collaborations, and hands-on industry mentoring for emerging artists, the organisation is actively bridging the gap between rural practice and the national stage.

Commenting, Stephanie J Hellewell Baird, RTS, said:

“We are incredibly humbled and deeply grateful to be named as finalists for two UK Dance Awards.

“For the past twenty years, our goal has simply been to look after our community’s well-being and ensure that dance is accessible, safe, and joyful for everyone—from toddlers to mature movers.

“By opening doors to professional residencies, mentoring, and touring companies, we are excited to see our quiet, remote island practice standing shoulder-to-shoulder with major national organisations.

“It is a testament to the heart and dedication of our students, partners, and
the families who support us every single day.”

Move Orkney continues to develop accessible pathways for rural dance, facilitating vital movement programs like The Merry Dancers Project for individuals living with Parkinson’s and MS. The studio remains dedicated to keeping care, inclusion, and mental well-being at the absolute centre of its practice as it looks forward to representing Orkney at the upcoming UK Dance Awards ceremony.
