The Ness of Brodgar will re-open tomorrow, 6 July, for a short exploratory archaeological excavation into a large circular feature which was revealed after a geophysical survey was conducted last year.

Members of the public will be able to visit the excavation from Tuesday 7 July until 30 July. There will be twice daily tours at 11am and 2.30pm. These tours are free and there is no need to book.

The feature is so interesting that although it was stated last year that excavations on the site had ceased for the time being – a change of direction was called for. John Gater, who readers will know from the highly successful Time Team series conducted the survey in 2026.

He said:

“The survey revealed something none of us were expecting. At this stage we simply don’t know exactly what the feature represents. It could prove to be archaeology of a different period, perhaps even a Bronze Age burial cairn, or maybe even something more exciting. That’s exactly why we’re going back to investigate.”

The circular feature is located where the temporary car park was which previous visitors to the site will be familiar with.

There’s an excellent public bus service: the X1 Kirkwall to Stromness via Skara Brae; and the 8S. Those with a Saltire Card have free travel, for all other members of the public the bus fares in Orkney are only £2.
