By Bernie Bell.

After some days of dismal weather, it was turning into a fine day so we decided to get out and about and go to see a new piece of sculpture which has been placed  near the beginning of the Fourth Churchill Barrier, not far from the ‘Magnus the Viking’  totem pole

First, we wandered around and under the impressive structure

the sculpture made with 4 whale bones

looking at it from all angles

Each ‘leg’ of the sculpture has a metal whale fluke attached

It’s topped by a whale & bird weather-vane – don’t you just want one?

Apparently, they’re the jawbones of two Fin Whales that stranded on Burray on 2020 & 21, and the extra-ordinary structure was made by local sculptor Willie Budge.  I gleaned this information from a post on the Orkney Wildlife FB page.

Nearby – nature’s sculpture

Then we went to say ’ Hello’ to Magnus the Viking

With accompanying autumnal fungi

I wonder what, if anything, the new sculpture is called?

We then followed the path through the dunes, looking back at the sculpture through the long grass

to the beach, where we found lovely clumps of Sea Rocket

Then on, to the Relic café for lunch. Yummy grub as always

The café is open through the winter, but the Fossil & Heritage Centre and shop close at the end of September – just time to get some unique Christmas presents!
