Michael Marra was elected leader of Scottish Labour, succeeding Anas Sarwar who as Lord Sarwar was appointed the UK Minister of State (Minister for Trade) in the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade on 23 July 2026.

He will address issues facing Orkney and discuss the future of Scottish Labour and how the party will work to support people living and working in Orkney and Shetland.

The discussion will consider how Scottish Labour can better reflect the priorities of island communities, from reliable transport and affordable housing to access to public services – and ensure that members and supporters in Orkney and Shetland have a strong voice in shaping the party’s direction.

Mike Macleod, Orkney Labour’s candidate in the 2026 Scottish Parliament Election, welcomed Michael Marra and said:

‘Michael Marra is an enormously experienced, capable and very articulate politician.  Coming as he does from Dundee, he appreciates there is very much more to Scotland than the Central Belt and is very much focussed on issues facing people in Orkney and Shetland.”

“When I worked with Michael on Labour’s Scottish Policy Forum, I found him a tough but very fair negotiator who understood the special needs of the Highlands and Islands.  We could not have a better fellow to be Scottish Labour leader.”
