The contract for the Northern Isles Ferry Services was awarded to Serco Limited on 22 April 2020.

The awarding of the Northern Isles Ferry contract has been delayed again due to a legal challenge by CalMac Ferries Ltd.

from January islanders will be able to enjoy a 20% year round discount on cabin fares on Aberdeen-Kirkwall-Lerwick routes, and benefit from a three year fares freeze for passengers, non-commercial vehicles and cabins on those routes.
The 8 year contract is estimated to be worth around £370m.
