Birsay Big Day Out 2017 (F Grahame)

The sun was shining at Birsay on Saturday 3rd of June for the Big Day Out – Birsay’s gala day. The annual event was not held last year with the commemoration taking place around the 100 years of the sinking of HMS Hampshire during World War 1. So this year everyone was looking forward to this truly community event.

The hall was already getting busy just after 2pm when I arrived. As I left lots of people were coming through the doors.

The Birsay Big Day out serves as a fund raiser for the community hall paying for its running costs like maintenance and insurance. The Hall is vital to this vibrant community and is well used by a whole variety of groups.

Caroline Atkinson outlined some of them for me. There’s

  • the whist and 500
  • the mum’s and toddlers
  • the activity club for primary aged kids
  • the WRI
  • the Drama Club

The Birsay community volunteers also form the subcommittee for the St. Magnus Marathon. There will be 2 parts to the marathon: a 10K race going round Boardhouse Loch and a fun 5K event. You can find all about them on the Birsay Community Association Facebook page including how to enter.

There were lots of stalls at the Big Day Out and a chance to win a variety of prizes that would appeal to all ages. Outside there were fun events and games for kids and the sunshine made it all the merrier.
