Film maker, Danny Boyle has launched the events which will see a poignant art installation etched into the sand on beaches across the British Isles.

“This will be a unique moment to say goodbye and thank you, together, to the millions of men and women who left their shores during the war, many never to return. Join us at one of the beaches around the UK or take part online.” Danny Boyle

Pages of the Sea will take place on 11th of November to mark 100 years since the Armistice marked the end of World War One.

Waulkmill is one of the first beaches to be confirmed as participating but it is hoped that more communities will join in.

There is also the opportunity for people to join in online and say their own farewells. You can find out more about how to do that here: Pages of the Sea

One response to “Pages of the Sea at Waulkmill Bay”

  1. […] volunteers will begin to create a large-scale portrait in the sand at Scapa Beach of an Orcadian soldier killed during WWI as part of Danny Boyle’s 14-18 NOW commission, ‘Pages of the Sea’. The artwork – one of 30 in the UK and only 5 across Scotland – will signify both the departure of the soldier from the county to serve at war, and – as the tide washes their image away – the loss of their life and those of many others. More details about this event will be unveiled in coming weeks. Pages of the Sea at Waulkmill Bay […]
