Production from Scotland’s marine salmon farms increased by over 16% in 2017 a recent survey has shown. Scottish Fish Farm Production
The increase in production amounted to 189,707 tonnes, an increase of 26,890 tonnes at 226 sites. The number of people employed, however, fell by 55 to 1,431 with a loss of 17 full time and 38 part time jobs.
There was also an increase of 6% in the number of freshwater salmon farmed.
This comes at a time when the public and other interested organisations are becoming increasingly concerned over the environmental impacts of commercial fish farming in Scotland.
There are other fish being produced in the aquaculture industry but salmon is by far the major species being farmed.
