The Ness Battery Stromness

There are still many places in Orkney that stay open over the winter season – and the Ness Battery is one of them – but you have to book in advance.

You can find details here: Visit Ness Battery

And on Twitter

The Ness Battery is an incredibly well preserved site and part of Orkney’s wartime heritage. An expert guide will take you round the facility and explain how it was used.

Located on the outskirts of Stromness you follow the single track road past the golf course and there is a car park a short distance from the site. Alternatively, you can park in Stromness and stroll along the coastal path to the meeting point at the car park. There are several structures from Orkney’s wartime heritage to see along the path.

The expert knows his stuff.

One of the delights – and it is indoors in what was the mess hall/ theatre – is the mural which was discovered and restored by conservators for Historic Environment Scotland.
