On 7th of March 1912 Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen announced to the world the location of the South Pole which he had reached on 14th December 1911.

Amundsen’s team were highly skilled and used sled dogs on the expedition. His great achievement was acknowledged worldwide but overshadowed in the UK by the news of the death of all of the men in the Scott expedition.

A recent film about Amundsen and the expedition is well worth a watch.
