Home-Start Orkney, are encouraging the Orkney public to join their staff team in aiming to cover the equivalent distance of the Orkney mainland as they participate in this year’s Virtual KiltWalk, taking place over the weekend of 23rd – 25th April.
This annual event, which ordinarily takes place in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, last year raised over £5 million pounds, which was distributed amongst over 900 charities – although as with many other events, it was forced to cancel large scale gatherings and events, and instead encouraged fundraisers to participate in their local community.
This year, the Virtual KiltWalk weekend offers the opportunity to everyone to get involved while raising funds for their chosen cause. Home-Start Orkney previously had young fundraiser, Christopher, participate in the Edinburgh KiltWalk in 2018, raising over £500 for the charity.
Senior Co-ordinator, Erika Copland,explained:
“This is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the great Orkney outdoors, and if walking isn’t your thing, you can participate in any way which suits you, be it sea swimming, or bouncing on the trampoline.
“The key thing is to have fun, and help us to reach our target along the way. The funds raised will be used to support local families who are experiencing varying challenges on top of those of daily parenting, including financial worries, mental health issues and loneliness.”
Home-Start Orkney has been supporting families in the local community continuously since the national lockdown in March 2020, adapting their services overnight from home visits and indoor group support to old fashioned telephone calls, and more modern Zoom and video calls. Overall, in 2020, the charity supported 36 families with young children, including families referred to the service for support during that initial lockdown.
If anybody is interested in either participating, or in making a donation, details on the Home-Start Orkney team and how to join/donate can be found at Home-Start Orkney fundraising for The Kiltwalk on JustGiving
