On 9th May 1816, the Gothic novel Glenarvon was published. The novel by Lady Caroline Lamb created a sensation in its day.

The book is set during the Irish rebellion of 1798 . Characters were depictions of real people in Society who could be easily identified.
This was Lady Caroline Lamb’s first novel and readers of the day were able to work out that it was about her affair with the poet Lord Byron. Despite, or perhaps because of, the ensuing scandal, the success of the novel produced a second edition. It would appear that Society liked nothing better than to read about sleazy affairs.
