Scottish Conservative, Highlands and Islands MSP, Tim Eagle is seeking feedback from constituents in Orkney ahead of a debate in the Scottish Parliament on rural transport.

Mr Eagle secured the debate, which is due to take place on 29th October, in order to highlight transport issues affecting people across rural Scotland, and provide MSPs representing rural areas an opportunity to make their cases directly to ministers. It is expected that Stephen Flynn, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, will respond to the debate.

Tim Eagle said:

“Few areas in Scotland are more dependent on their ferry and air links than Orkney which, of course, includes the inter-island services, as well as the routes to the mainland.

“There is considerable work going on to make these links more resilient and which requires joint working between the transport providers as well as the council and the Scottish Government.

“Getting this right is crucial for the prosperity and sustainability of the islands. That is why I would be delighted to hear the views of local people, ahead of the debate, about what they think is going right but also where they think things could be improved.”

“It’s really important that the Scottish Parliament focuses more on its direct responsibilities rather than being distracted by issues which are of more interest to politicians than to the public.

“Transport is an issue which all people across Scotland, especially rural Scotland, are concerned about, and that is why I am so pleased that MSPs will be focusing on it for this debate. I’m sure it will be an interesting and constructive session.”

Mr Eagle said that constituents who would like to raise transport issues with him, ahead of the debate, could contact him at: tim.eagle.msp@parliament.scot
