Plant Focus: Rhubarb

Rhubarb is now coming into its best in the garden. This easy to grow plant can be harvested and used in puddings and savouries.

The plant dies back in winter but every Spring new shoots will arrive and grow rapidly. The stalks are pulled not cut, remove the leaves and put them on the compost. It is also important not to let the plant flower. You can easily remove any flowering parts by cutting them out.

The rhubarb plant was brought to Europe at the beginning of the 17th C from Asia.
