Orkney Records Another Positive #Covid Case

As Orkney gets set to move to Level 0 tomorrow another positive case of Covid19 has been recorded in the islands. This brings the cumulative total in Orkney to 76.

Today’s announced figures in Scotland are showing the biggest increase in cases for months.

Stats for Scotland 4th of June 2021

  • 992 new cases of COVID-19 reported
  • 26,962 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results
    • 3.9% of these were positive
  • 2 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive
  • 8 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
  • 116 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
  • 3,326,005 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 2,170,570 have received their second dose

The increase in cases is happening across the whole of the UK at a rapid rate.

In Orkney 10,129 people aged 50+ ( 96.7%) have had their first dose of the Covid19 vaccine, 9,338 (89.1%) have had their second dose (figures correct to 3rd June 2021.)

It should be noted that the vaccine gives protection for the worst effects of covid 19, it does not prevent you from getting it or passing it on to others.

The advice continues to be to remember FACTS:

  • wear a face covering
  • avoid crowded places
  • clean hands and surfaces regularly
  • stay 2m away from other people
  • self-isolate and get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms
  • download the Protect Scotland app

And people who wish to visit the islands are requested to take 2 lateral flow tests. These are free to everyone in Scotland.

You can find all that information here: If you do not have symptoms (lateral flow tests)

  1. And how many people are going to think that Level 0 means no restrictions – do as you like?

Some reading this might ask don’t I get tired of going on about it? Yes, I do. I’m heartily tired of the whole situation – but I think the main thing I’m tired of is the non-sense of it. It’s plain to see what ‘works’ and what doesn’t, but that appears to have nothing to do with how people and governments behave!

Yes, I’m tired, very tired. If other people are tired of it too, why don’t they behave accordingly?

Please, folks – read this again – https://theorkneynews.scot/2021/02/25/are-we-living-in-a-post-responsibility-society/

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY! If those in charge won’t behave responsibly, we have to take it on ourselves to do so.

    • Me too… I am getting tired and frustrated that people do not even invest the minimum of responsibility to keep themselves properly informed. And by information I do not mean, social media or the headlines of media outlets.
Yes, everybody would wish this was over. But obviously not everybody is aware that it will take longer and could even get much more serious again, the longer people allow the virus to replicate in high numbers.
News like these are unsettling (https://www.crick.ac.uk/news/2021-06-03_pfizer-biontech-vaccine-recipients-have-lower-antibody-levels-targeting-the-delta-variant-first-discovered-in-india) but only confirm what many experts already expected: there are limitations to the efficacy of the vaccines against variants. This should prompt everybody to be a bit more cautious because the more cases we have out there in the community, the higher the chance of further (perhaps much more nasty) mutations. I do not believe that vaccines alone will be the silver bullet. Currently, it’s vaccines plus physical distancing plus masks which can make a difference… but only in combination!

Bernie, I think this will be keeping us busy for another while… let’s just hope people finally realise that ‘no risk, no fun’ isn’t really the appropriate attitude these days.

      • That’s just it though – there’s plenty of ‘fun’ to be had, even within the restrictions – I suppose it depends on a person’s idea of what fun is!
That’s why we’re doing our ‘One Day At A Time’ series – there is always something, in each day.

Fact is, sitting here at the computer, I’ve just heard a cuckoo – first time I’ve heard one here. That’s set me up for the day.
My mother used to say that I’m easy pleased!

We would like to be able to go out for meals and to listen to music and dance, but …needs must – simple as that.
I get a lot more pissed off at people’s attitude, than at the restraints we’re living under.
This attitude of ‘We must have it all, we demand it all, and we demand it now’ has taken decades of training.

        Mutter, mutter, mutter.
