Plant Focus: Ferns

Ferns are low maintenance plants if you plant them in your garden. Mostly they like shade and there are many varieties to choose from.

They can also be found growing in our verges and within wooded areas. And there’s also ones you can have as indoor plants.

Estimates of how many species of ferns there are ranges from 10,500 to 15,000.

The ferns constitute an ancient division of vascular plants, some of them as old as the Carboniferous Period (beginning about 358.9 million years ago) and perhaps older. Their type of life cycle, dependent upon spores for dispersal, long preceded the seed-plant life cycle.
