On Thursday, 5th May 2022, our dear friend and colleague, Nick Morrison died suddenly.
Nick was a founding member of The Orkney News, a Director of Orkney News Ltd, and a much valued reporter for us.
His wide interests were reflected in the range of events, organisations and issues Nick would report on. Everything from the best burger vans in Orkney, through to swimming at the Pickaquoy Centre and The Orkney Men’s Shed.
Nick regularly updated our readers on what The Orkney Men’s Shed was getting up to right from the very start of this community organisation:
Another valuable community group Nick reported on from its inception was Orkney Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club.
Nick loved writing about the Orkney community and supported as many events as he could. He was particularly enthusiastic about the Orkney International Science Festival, Orkney Renewable Energy Forum, and Orkney’s superb food and drinks sector.
But he didn’t just talk the talk when it came to the environment. Nick Morrison along with his wife Barbara built a wonderful family home using straw bale construction. The straw house at Orphir sits beautifully within its setting and is a lasting tribute to Nick Morrison and his vision for a better future for all.
Nick would also be prepared to listen to the views of others and engage in conversations with the people whom he met.
Here at The Orkney News we will miss you dearly old friend especially the enthusiasm and fun you brought wherever you went.
Nick Morrison is being cremated privately in Inverness on Tuesday, 17th May at 11:30. We’ll be thinking of you, Nick, of Barbara and your family.
