Orkney = Archaeology

By Bernie Bell

Well, that’s definitely the case in Rousay – aka The Egypt of the North.  Not only is the dig at Swandro happening right now…. https://www.swandro.co.uk/post/bit-breezy-today …….but also…… a  UHI Archaeology Institute team return to Rousay next Monday to continue the research excavation at Skaill farm.

The site, which was in use from the Norse period until the 19th century, is also the home to a large Norse hall. This structure, revealed in 2019, probably dating to the 10th to 12th centuries AD, was discovered beneath the more recent buildings. Or visit the site……

Years ago, Mike and I walked to this site, and I was very much taken with the feeling of generations of land use and care of the land there…..   https://theorkneynews.scot/2017/05/18/bernie-bell-orkney-walks-with-stories-rousay/ .  A lot more has been discovered in this area since our visit – and what might be un-earthed this season?
