#Covid in Scotland 13% Excess Deaths: Weekly Update

Published by the National Records of Scotland, 6th October 2022:

  • As of 2nd October 2022, there have been a total of 15,781 deaths registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate.
  • In week 39 there were 45 deaths involving COVID-19 (12 more than the previous week). 
  • The provisional total number of all deaths registered in Scotland in week 39 of 2022 (26th September to 2nd October) was 1,232 (137 or 13% above the 5-year average).  Note that last week included a bank holiday so this week’s figures may be higher due to registration offices catching up.

Ages of Covid Related Deaths in Scotland

  • Age 45 – 64: 5 deaths, 4 F, 1 M
  • Age 65 – 74: 8 deaths, 2 F, 6 M
  • Age 75 – 84: 17 deaths, 9 F, 8 M
  • Age 85+ : 15 deaths, 8 F, 7 M

6 deaths took place in Care Homes; 3 at home/ non institutional setting; and 36 deaths were in hospital.

Of the 45 Covid related deaths registered in Scotland, in 18 Covid was the main cause.

There were 137 excess deaths (13%) above the 5 year average.
