Trend of Excess Deaths Continues in Scotland

Published by the National Records of Scotland on 6th of July 2023 are the weekly deaths.

  • The provisional total number of deaths registered in Scotland in week 26 of 2023 (26th of June to 2nd July) was 1,126 (61 or 6% above the 5-year average).
  • As of 2nd of July 2023, there have been a total of 17,706 deaths registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate.
  • In week 26 there were 10 deaths involving COVID-19 (3 fewer than the previous week)

Those figures in more detail:

Of the 10 deaths involving Covid, Covid was the underlying cause in 6 of them. Eight of the deaths were in Hospital and 2 in Care Homes.

Age 65 – 74: 4 deaths, 1 female, 3 male

Age 75 – 84: 4 deaths all male

Age 85+ : 2 deaths: 1 female, 1 male.

There were 1,126 deaths due to all causes , an excess of 61 deaths taken over a 5 year average.

Excess deaths took place in Dementia/Alzheimer’s +2 ; Circulatory +7 ; Respiratory +1 ; and other causes +60.
