On Sept 24, 1952, the oceanographic survey vessel Kaiyo-Maru No 5 was destroyed by a submarine eruption.

The ship, its crew of 31 including 9 scientists were lost. This was the biggest disaster in the history of Japan’s Hydrographic Department. The Kaiyo-Maru No 5 had been sent to explore the newly formed volcanic island of Myojin. when they got there the island was gone the ship. It is thought that the vessel continued in the location but was directly over the volcano’s crater.
At 12.21 pm the volcano erupted again and volcanic missiles shelled the ship. Water was blown skyward and the ship dropping into the void was splintered.
