Sgathaich: ‘Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside’

Sgathaich, an old woman with long hair and wearing a crown

Yet another example of anime with long names. We’re a few weeks into the current anime season, and new dubs are starting to appear. Which is good for me as this show’s second season is getting dubbed and I watched the original dubbed and it can be a bit weird moving from a dub to a sub, and a bit disappointing as I don’t think The Vampire Dies In No Time Season 2 has been dubbed yet and that’s been out a good amount of time now.

So first up this is not an Isekai, it is a straight fantasy. No one has suddenly turned out to be from another world, and if they have, they are being very quiet about it. It is adapted from a light novel series like many shows now but as said not an Isekai.

Our lead character is Red, real name Gideon Ragnason. The brother of the Hero Ruti. Red was tricked into leaving the Hero’s party by the jealous Ares claiming Red was weak and holding everyone back, though it is actually because he felt Red was in the way of being with Ruti that he felt was his right. The world is one where each living being is born with a special Blessing. Red had the Guide blessing which isn’t considered too amazing while Arse believed a person’s entire value came from what blessing they had… yes he is an arse that is made very clear very early on.

We spent most of our time with Red as he starts his life in the far away town of Zoltan and meets up with his old flame Rit, a princess who, while he was part of the Hero’s team, saved her kingdom from demons. They start living together of course and are married or at least engaged by the end of the season. Meanwhile as we See Red’s life going well, we see just how much Red held together the Hero’s team and how much an incompetent arse Ares is despite his belief that the crest a person has is the most important thing about them.

Yes, this show has a very big element of “does one’s birth dominate their life” but also with a few bits of world building that imply that the god humans worship that gives the blessings, might not be too good of a deity, throw in a few background details in the final episodes and there are some things I hope start to be looked into later on.

As I’ve said before, straight fantasies that don’t involve Isekai are quite rare and it’s always pleasant to see them. The themes going on in the show may not be too subtle but some elements of ongoing plot raise interesting elements of mystery. But ultimately you just want to see the person that thinks he’s entitled get his ass handed to him.

Rating: 👍👍👍
