The Starling is Orkney’s Top Bird

The Starling came out on top of the 2024 results in Orkney for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, the largest citizen science project in the world.

Orkney’s top ten of birds is as follows:

  1. Starling
  2. House Sparrow
  3. Blackbird
  4. Feral Pigeon
  5. Collared Dove
  6. Goldfinch
  7. Wood Pigeon
  8. Greenfinch
  9. Rook
  10. Robin

The Blackbird, Goldfinch and Greenfinch show a decline in sightings in 2024. The full Orkney results can be found at the end of this article.

43,412 people took part in Scotland in the Big Garden Birdwatch where the Sparrow took top spot with the Starling coming in Second.

Scotland’s top ten:

  4. Chaffinch
  5. Blackbird
  6. Woodpigeon
  7. Great Tit
  8. Robin
  9. Goldfinch
  10. Coal Tit

The RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch has been going for 45 years having first started out from the children’s TV programme Blue Peter. It has now become an important gauge of the health of our environment through the counting of birds in our parks and gardens.

Across the UK as a whole, the House Sparrow retained its top spot with the Blue Tit as runner up. 610,000 people across the UK took part in 2024 counting a total of 9.7million birds for an hour in the last weekend in January.
