Sgathaich: Plan 9 From Outer Space

Sgathaich, an old woman with long hair and wearing a crown

I originally considered reviewing this one during October when I wrote about a bunch of movies all featuring the zombies of some kind. But things happened and some interesting alternatives came up. But now time has come around so let’s look at a film that has been viewed as one of the worst of all time.

Let’s get things clear first. You are not watching this because you want to watch a good film. You are watching this because you have heard it’s one of the worst movies of all time and are hoping for a so-bad-its-good experience. Good news it’s one of those films.

Directed, Produced and Written by Ed Wood, the film was made with a budget of $60,000 which shows, just look at the sets… and how few of them there are plus their quality and you really see this is a cheaply made film. The premise when put to a basic concept sounds pretty nuts and something you could think you see as a major horror film, Aliens are working to raise an army of the dead. But then you start to get into the details and it goes on levels of dumb.

For one there are only 3 risen dead in the entire film, and I don’t just mean you only see 3. They mention they have only raised 3 by the end of the film. Then dumber are the explanations of why all this is happening. The aliens late on reveal they are doing this all because of fear man will eventually build a bomb that will ignite sunlight, which would make a chain reaction destroying every star in the universe. Ok so far a bit nutty but not too far, worried about man’s own self-destructive nature, other films have done that, but why the raising of the dead? And this is where the dumb goes into over drive, you see they have been trying to tell the government, and in English too… BUT, the government have such a policy about flying saucers not existing that they refuse to acknowledge the aliens openly calling them on the phone talking about all this. The logical solution apparently is to raise an army of the dead, have them walk on the capital to finally get acknowledged and sit down to talk.

The film has some classic 50s B movie stars like Tor Johnson who plays one of the zombies, but also Bela Lugosi… KIND OF… he kind of died before this was finished so some clips of him were spliced in, and a stand in used who holds up a cloak in front of his face as if Dracula… he also plays one of the 3 zombies.

The use of stock footage and the few sets they have, make following the time of day in each scene an absolute nightmare. All the scenes in the graveyard set are at night even if they are inter spliced with people in broad daylight.

This sounds terrible right? well, yes but in a funny way. As said you’re not watching this for a good film, you’re watching it to have a fun little laugh, then getting sad remembering this is probably better than a lot of films with a vastly larger budget. It’s by no means the worst movie ever, heck it’s not BAD it’s just bad in a way that’s still enjoyable. You will end up quoting and laughing at the cheesy dumb lines about our stupid minds, but you will also end up with a smile on your face, not feeling cheated or angry about what you watched.

Rating: 🧟🧟🧟‍♀️ but mainly because this is just a fun dumb watch.
