Driving through the Hatston Industrial Estate we noticed that the Grain Earth House has had a new information board fitted since we past it last, so we stopped to have a look and take some ‘photos.

I walked right round the enclosure and by doing so it’s possible to see the general layout of what’s under the ground

I stood and thought of those people, all that time ago, creating and using this as a place for purposes which had meaning for them. We don’t know what those purposes were, or where those people lived, but at this site it’s possible to feel a real connection with them.

It may seem incongruous  – such a site in such a place – but people are people and that part of Orkney was busy then, as it is now.

One response to “Grain Earth House”

  1. This reflection on the Grain Earth House is both grounding and thought-provoking. It’s remarkable how a site nestled within a modern industrial estate can still evoke such a strong sense of connection to the past. The new information board is a welcome addition, helping visitors visualize the subterranean structure and appreciate the craftsmanship of Iron Age builders. Walking the perimeter and observing the mounds offers a quiet moment to reflect on the lives and rituals of those who once used this space—whatever their purpose may have been.

Interestingly, this juxtaposition of ancient ingenuity and modern industry mirrors the evolution of how we use space today. Just as the Grain Earth House was likely part of a larger, organized settlement, today’s industrial estates are increasingly adopting intelligent systems to optimize operations. The rise of automation in logistics is captured in this Warehouse Robotics Market report, which explores how robotics are transforming storage, retrieval, and inventory management. These technologies are the modern equivalent of ancient efficiency—reshaping how we interact with our environments.
