the notice at the entrance to the garden

At the south end of Stromness is the memorial garden dedicated to the Bard of Orkney, George Mackay Brown.

Maintained by community volunteers The Haven Inside the Bay is a perfect place for a seat and to pass the time after a walk up the street.

The central grassed area is formed into the shape of a fish.

It is a small area but it packs a lot in with maturing flowering shrubs and plants self seeding wherever they can get a grip between stones.

There are plenty of seats where you can relax.

It is wonderful to see this garden which represents so much not just to Stromness, or to Orkney, but to Scotland being so well cared for by local volunteers.

  1. Can confirm. I wrote some poetry while sitting in this garden just last week.
