NHS Scotland staff have accepted the Scottish Government’s pay deal. The pay rise, backdated to 1 April 2024, will come into effect from next month.

UNISON represents around 40% of the NHS workforce in Scotland, including catering workers, administrators, managers, occupational therapists and nursing staff.

UNISON Scotland lead organiser for health Matt McLaughlin said:

“UNISON represents almost two fifths of NHS workers and has secured the best deal currently possible. But acceptance of this offer should not lead to complacency from the Scottish government.

“If ministers are serious about recognising and rewarding NHS staff for the incredible job they do, they need to be far better at dealing with the annual pay round.

“There’s considerable anger that it’s taken 200 days to get an offer on the table and hard-working staff won’t see a bump in their pay until at least the end of October.”

Trade union Unite have members across the NHS including workers in estates, porters, the ambulance service, medical equipment management, scientists and theatre roles.

James O’Connell, Unite lead negotiator for the health sector said:

“Unite has secured an inflation beating pay increase for our NHS Scotland membership. We believe the offer was the best negotiable under the present public financial circumstances, and it will provide a significant boost to take-home pay.”

Examples of increases for 2024-25:

  • experienced porters (band 2) will receive £1,395
  • experienced healthcare support workers (band 4) will receive £1,651
  • experienced staff nurses (band 5) will receive £2,072
  • experienced paramedics (band 6) will receive £2,535.

The investment in our Scottish NHS is worth more than £448 million.

Health Secretary in the Scottish Government Neil Gray said:

“I am pleased that trade unions have unanimously agreed to accept this pay offer, which ensures that nurses and healthcare staff in Scotland, who are part of Agenda for Change, will have the best reward package in the UK.”

“I want to express my thanks again to Scotland’s hardworking healthcare staff for the care they provide to patients, day in, day out.  They are the very backbone of the NHS and we are committed to ensuring they feel supported and valued.”
